Project A
Acoustic Treatment of Standby Generator Installation at Commercial building – London
Project A Description
RODEng Consulting LLP employed to carry out acoustic survey of 6MWe Standby Generator installation at a Central London New Commercial Building and to assess noise at discharge and inlet positions. An acoustic report was provided to the client with suggestions of noise mitigation measures to be employed to reduce noise breakout from the installation and allow for practical completion to be achieved under contract delay penalties.
Initial acoustic measurements found the installation to be in exceedance of the
acoustic specification for the building.
Target level reduction: To reduce from 74dBA @ 1m to 65dBA @ 1m (51dBA @ NSR)
Total reduction achieved: Noise breakout contained. Vibration of louvre mesh reduced to achieve specified requirements.
Project Scope
- Acoustic Survey of installation
- Acoustic tests carried out with all plant operating to establish levels of exceedance
-Assessment of Trouble Frequencies Measurement of transmissions zones
-Acoustic Report of installation and proposed mitigation measures - Specification of materials and methods to treat the installation
- Assessment of site and local noise levels post improvement works to demonstrate specification compliance
Site Appraisal
- Noise Levels at Discharge Exceeded specification by 8dB
- Noise Levels at Inlet Exceeded specification by 9dB
Acoustic Improvement Works
– Noise Levels at Discharge Treated as Follows:
- Acoustic Infill required to radiator section – Completed in Rockwool and Fire Stopping
- Acoustic Absorption added to the discharge plenum
- Noise breakout reduced at fan cowl fixing
- Acoustic Lining of discharge transition
– Noise Levels at Inlet Treated as Follows:
- Acoustic Lining added to transition plenum by Inlet attenuator
- Acoustic panel added to bottom of attenuator transition to plantroom
- Acoustic infill to section above inlet attenuator
- Bracing of wire “bird” mesh to rear of inlet louvre and remounting of louvres to mullions
Final Assessment post corrective works
- Noise Levels at Discharge achieve 65dBA @ 1m with all units operating at load
- Noise Levels at Inlet achieve 65dBA @ 1m with all units operating at load
- Tonal noise treated to adjacent receptor
- Building Acoustic Treatment is now specification compliant
